5 preventive measures against malaria

Malaria is a life-threatening disease that is especially endemic in Africa. It is caused by parasites that can range from plasmodium falciparum, vivax, ovale, and malariae. Plasmodium falciparum is the most dangerous and most prevalent in the African continent. These parasites are transmitted through the bites of infected anopheles mosquito, precisely the female type. However, it can be prevented and treated.

The symptoms range from fever to headache and chills, joint pain, abdominal pain, rapid breathing/heart rate, general body weakness, jaundice, anemia (low blood cell), etc.

If not managed early, it can progress to severe form and move to vital organs of the body like the brain.

Some drugs prevent malaria, including other standard low-cost measures like;

  • Clearing of bushy areas and drainage of breeding sites
  • Use of insecticides treated nets
  • Use of mosquitoes repellant
  • Protect your skin by wearing clothes that cover your body when exposed.
  • One of the many ways of treating malaria is by using ACT(Artemisinin-based combination therapy).

Lonart belongs to this group. This therapy is brought about due to antimalarial resistance and had a high efficacy rate. The use of two or more drugs now proves more efficient. Examples include Arthemeter/Lumefantrine, amodiaquine/artesunate, sulphadoxine/pyrimethamine, etc.

In summary, according to the World Health Organization, early diagnosis and treatment reduce mortality and transmission. According to WHO, there will be over 241 million cases of malaria all over the world in 2020. The best treatment for malaria is the use of ACT, which Lonart falls under.

It is used for acute uncomplicated infection due to plasmodium falciparum.
It is not used to treat severe malaria that has spread to the lung, kidney, or cerebral malaria.
